People Within the Music Video

As I'm not fully sure how many people will be mainly filmed within the music video as the song could be suitable for even only one person as long as it's filmed effectively and has a great look to it, However my main aim is to have two or three people, All having their own look to add to the music video as well as the main look I am wanting for the lead singer. However I will be planning out the whole storyboard and seeing which would look best and where, also where it could be suitable to have more then one main performer.

Idea's of Costume and Make-Up

My thoughts so far on how the singer's apperance should be is he or they should be dressed to stand out and over the top, meaning make-up and crazy funky hair along with black or white clothes with jewellery such as earrings, necklaces, rosarys, braclets, wristbands, belts and studs. These are all possibilties on making the singer or people stand out beyond the normal everyday person, also creating a interesting unique look to the audiences eye hopefully keeping them entertained on what is happening beyond the style. My main thought is to keep them far away as the normal everyday people and go a step further into a more rocky crazy look.

Pictures of Locations

I am still currently searching on the most suitable of locations for the idea's I've had in mind. The main look I am going for is both Light and very dark places which I'm hoping to get highlighted up with neon lights or glow sticks giving a unoridinary creepy but interesting look to it whilst the performance is going on.

Music Video's - Performance

All Time Low

These music videos of All Time Low caught my eye on performance mainly because of one of them is pure live performance but still makes a super effective music video. Also the other video looks as if it could be a little bit of narrative however It doesn't purely follow it to me feels like it's own short of little performance within a performance.

Bring Me The Horizon

What I like with the performance within these two music videos by Bring Me The Horizon is the fact that they maintain the speed to the song, even though it is extremely fast beat and heavy. Also it brings excitement to the eye purely from their quick and effective movements.

Breathe Carolina

These music video's by Breathe Carolina are quick and very effective and look amazing even when there's not much happening, the main image is the stars which are easily seen even within a crowd allowing the viewers to notice them. Also a main thing in their videos even though it's performance based is there are a lot of women.

Music Video's - Narrative

Fall Out Boy

Music Video Song Choice

For my Year 13 music video the song I have chosen to do is Adam Lambert - Whataya want from me. The reason why I have chosen this song is because he is not a world wide known artist as he has only been singing for a few years now and isn't populated as he should be with his incredible voice and amazing songs. He became to singing after being a threatre performer and then going onto American Idol in which he came second in, however is working on his second album coming out soon next year.

Adam Lambert - Whataya Want From Me

I believe I can make a very good performance based music video to this song along with perhaps some narrative however that is not the main priority in my mind. But as this song is not to fast it makes the lip singing much easier on myself and whoever else appears in the video, also as there is a beat it also helps create in my mind when and where to place a edit. As there is a slow beat at the start and a faster beat mid way it helps me understand the time I've got to create tension on the viewer so they keep watching and being entertained, and as it slows down again a bit after but not to much it can help maintain the excitement.

Voice
I believe that if you want to make a suitable music video to a song, especially highly performance based ones which use lip singing need to match in view the sound of the voice to give ultimate excitement depending on the voice itself whilst performing, as sometimes it can look confusing or weird if the person's appearance doesn't look suitable to the voice.

Favourite Director of Music Video - Patrick Fogarty

Favourite Music Video Director

My recent favourite director of music videos would have to be Patrick Fogarty. Mainly because of his recent music videos on rock and independant bands which I'm huge fans of and particually found the music videos to their songs excellent and superb, along with very unique and exciting. He has done work with my favourite band Black Veil Brides along with Blood On The Dance Floor. he has done roughly 4 music videos for Black Veil Bride out of their 5. These consist of : Knives and Pens, Perfect Weapon, The Legacy and their newly released music video Rebel Love Song. Along with Blood On The Dance Floors most recent music video Bewitched.

The reason in which why he is my favourite director of music videos is purely because the style he produces them in catch my eye and I'd consider a lot of the viewers eye also. He produces amazingly performance and narrative music videos declaring on whatever style the music.

Album Cover - We Stich These Wounds

In Black Veil Brides album cover of "We Stich These Wounds" the dark image of the lead singer Andrew Biersack in his performance makeup and style, along with his possessions the cruxific and war paint makeup, amongst with his eyeliner. It shows the exact meaning of the words, as you can see next to his lips he has himself stiching his mouth up signifying the album title. This has a great imagery effect on the viewer and a very fasincating look to it, making the audience curious further onto the song itself as the artist looks the part.

Goodwin's Theory of Voyeurism

Voyeurism aroused from Freud Sigmund the famous psychologist who stated that an audience can gain sexual pleasure within the world of cinema and videos.

Voyeurism within all music videos nowadays is how a wide majority of artists sell their music, giving a sexual appeal. This is mainly aimed at males with a wide variety of females within the music video acting sexual and seductive with the use of facial expressions and body language. Varying by the clothes or lack of clothes women wear, such as Mini skirts, Shorts and Bikini's along with revealing dresses showing bra's and cleavage. This is extremely common now within music videos to keep the audience watching the screen and listening to the song. The Use of camera angles vary from low angle shots which track upwards revealing more of the lady it's sexually filming, There is also a lot of close ups of pacific body parts such as bum, breasts, lips, eyes, face and legs these are used to emphasise the women features which sexually appeal to the male audience. This is shown in the music video “Sweat” By Snoop Dawg and David Guetta. The constant close ups on the female in lack of clothing and doing very sexual poses create the feeling of voyeurism as it pleases the male audience. Within the music video there is a lot of hard cuts of females in different positions being very sexual along with the male singer Snoop Dawg, as she sexually sits on top of him. There is also some Voyeurism from male performance, but not so commonly used compared to female performance, However in the music video “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj there is a male performance of voyeurism as their all very hunky and bulky men with a great healthy looking body and what females find attractive. They use this by having sexual dances and activity such as pink liquid being thrown over one of the male's body.

Laura Mulvey wrote the essay “visual pleasure and Narrative Cinema” Mulvey identifies three perspectives that occur in the film which serve to sexually objectify women. The first perspective is of the male character on the screen and how he perceives the female character. The second is of the spectator as they see the female character. The third joins the first two together such as looking and spectator of the male audience to take the female character as a sexual object through looking to the male character in the film placing that person as themselves.

However there are music videos that can be argued agaisnt Laura Mulvey's theory, such as “Going Under” By Evanescence instead of being sexually objectified we see her being much more covered up compared to the common music videos, also very performance based as if she's performing a live performance. However it is not showing innocence but the red dress could reveal Love and Passion.

My Conclusion: Laura Mulvey's and Goodwin's theories do make sense in the way they can be applied to music videos, As it is happening in a large majority of the common music videos being made with sexual voyeurism being represented in both male and female performances to sexual please the audiences eye and taste. However there are still music video's which go against the theories and use no set of Voyeurism what so ever and are purely music video and vocals only pleasing the audience.

Andrew Dennis Biersack (Andy Sixx ) - Lead Singer Of Black Veil Brides

We Stich These Wounds
Set The World On Fire

Biography
He was born in December 26th 1991 making him 20 years old, born in Michwahee Wisconsin. He is the last original Black Veil Brides member which has been active since 2006 to the present date.

His genre style of work is glam metal, hard rock, metalcore, post-hardcore (early) so he is roughly an all around rockstar from a young age.

Star image established in early videos
He had a much more less rocky looking style such as wearing normal plain t-shirts and wearing normal skinny jean's. He also had much shorter and neat cleaned hair styled long on the sides and fringe but not so much hair on the top of his head giving him layers to style. Also he didn't use as much make-up on his face, however he was still wearing quite a considerable amount.

Image shown later in career
He has grown his hair much longer giving it a much more optional way of styling such as he can leave it with a natural curve and hairspray it for volume, or straigthen it also with hairpsray giving it a straight puffy volume effect. He also now has a much more unique look and style making him very recognisible and you could relate him to his band if seeing him on the street aftering seeing his live perfomance or music vidoe. His music videos have become a lot more hectic and crazier relating to the rock genre, however on some videos there is narrative mixed in also. He's created his own unique look with his style and make-up being chosen by himself so each band member will have their own personal style. *PICTURES*(live perfomance, recent videos, hair, lyrics)

Camerawork editing
Roughly highlights his face and figure and style such as he is 6'3 tall and very skinny styled uniquely which stands out beyond the normal and average crowd. Also his long hair makes him very recognisiable making him stand out and being very eye catchy within a big crowd.

"Devil Worshiper"

Conclusion
In summary Andrew Biersack is just a young aged rockstar who does not care about the people who dislike him and his style, he cares more about the people who appreciate his music and style. He does what he wants in his own way as a band without much care too the consequences, he's also developed into his own unique rockstar, creating his own image.

Black Veil Bride (The Legacy) - Music Video

Black Veil Brides (The Legacy) - Music Video Analysis

Music Video Analysis – Black Veil Bride – The Legacy

James Vlahos
Narrative – There is no real narrative within the music video precisely because music videos don't have to always follow the lyrics because you hearing the lyrics should create it's own images or just be heard.

Look like stars and unique – recognisable

  • Make up shows they aren't camera shy and don't care what others think
  • music keeps up with the speed of video
Performance – Within the first second to the last second the music video is completely full of awesome perfomance which can keep the audience entertained whilst listening too the music and getting enjoyment from watching the lively music video. This works extremely well because when performing live you don't have the same stuff as you would on the music video if it was more of a narrative video.

Shot types, distances + effects they give – There is a massive variety of shots at different distances varying from extreme close ups to birds eye view of individuals and the whole band. There is lots of medium close ups showing the members performing and their facial expressions with their unique sense of fashion and make-up, The distances changes with pace of music to give an excited lively effect keeping the viewers watching. A few examples of close ups of members of the band is from the very beginning where it's only just begun, you get a few very close shots of the lead singers facial expression as he walks forwards and throughout the whole video he's not shy of going close to the camera himself. There are also a very massive amount of different type of shots however there is never any zooming, it is purely the camera moving around. The effects this gives is a very clear high definition shot/image which gives the viewer a clear look.

Camera Movement – Camera movement plays a major part within this music video as if you watch the video carefully in each and every cut there camera is always constantly moving around and never stays still. There are fast movements going in and out and there are slow and fast movements of the camera moving upwards and downwards giving a powerful portrayal to the members of the band it is showing at the time. Camera Movement I believe is done very professionally and doesn't have any errors in my assumption and you can tell the video was planned out very carefully.

Camera/Shot Types effect on Performance and lyrics - When it's instrumental there is a lot of shots of the band playing the guitar/drums and the singer just messing around as he likes too do. Creating a exciting effect, However when the lead singer begins to sing at the beginning the camera becomes more concentrated on him but also showing the other individuals with quick cuts too, It also likes to switch between normal sunny day too dark rainy day with fire around to keep the entertainment and excitement even though the location really hasn't changed. The way the performance and camera and shot types effect the lyrics is because the singer always has a very cheeky look on him, kinda like he's eye raping the camera with his unique crazy look. When the nice calm “Ohh” Begins to play the camera quickly shows as much as possible of every aspect of what's happening and to keep it all recognisable. However their not always fussy on making it always completely quick and will allow 4-6 seconds on one clip which may not be considered along time but it is for some music videos. The thing that works mostly for this music video is how the music relates too the entertainment you can see them having, which kind of makes it a lot more happier and exciting to watch for some. As it gets closer to the end it begins to turn a bit more hectic and they begin to throw things and smash car windows showing personalty of not having a care, but are not harming anyone in the process as it's a abandon car in a place where it's most likely to get crushed.

Black Veil Brides (The Legacy) - Lyrics

The Legacy"
Racing faster,
Escape disaster,
Partners in crime will leave their mark
We make our own way,
No thoughts of yesterday,
Black hearts of chrome and battle scars (chrome and battle scars)
Oh.

The legacy,
Born from a dream,
On leather wings,
Rose from the streets,
With the hands on destiny,

We came from nothing,
But promise one thing,
We'll change the world with these guitars,
So listen closely,
And don't stop working,
No one can tell you who you are (tell you who you are)
Oh,

The legacy,
Born from a dream,
On leather wings,
Rose from the streets,
With the hands on destiny,
The legacy,
Born from a dream,
On leather wings,
Rose from the streets,
With the hands on destiny,

Argh
Run
(Run)
Run
Never look back!
Run
(Run)
Run
Never look back!
Run
Run
Run
Never look back!
Run!

The legacy,
Born from a dream,
On leather wings,
Rose from the streets,
With the hands on destiny,
The legacy,
Born from a dream,
On leather wings,
Rose from the streets,
With the hands on destiny,

Voyeurism

Framing Hanley (Lollipop) In the 5th minute, Boys are normal and average lookers with no tone or muscle on show, showing that you dont have too be the typical thing a guy wants too impress, which is normally a 6 pac to define good looks and healthyness, However all the girls are thing with the average or perhaps above revealling their bodys, such as breasts, stomache and bum.
Snoop Dogg + David Guetta (Sweat) - 2:30 Girl is in a bikini as the male is just casually sat down on a chair in the middle of a desert with a car behind him, looking like a sterotypical "pimp" as shes lifting her leg, opening her crotch etc just showing off a sexual vibe.
Christina Aguilera (Dirty) - 1:10 Girls are just dancing shaking their stuff in a boxing ring whilst dancing sexually wearing not so much, Christina is surrounded by shirtless males around her and everyone sweaty, open crotch casually at 1:25 leg lifts and a awkward roll on the floor even when clothed it is still very little clothing, all girls are thin.

This is some examples of how Voyeurism is used within Music Videos, showing the differences in both males and females on how too create a sexual interest as such too the viewers.
